前回に引き続き、熟語を使った例文を記載していきます。
英検英作文の採点基準の一つである「語彙」部では「課題に相応しい語彙を正しく使えているか」という観点から採点されますが、熟語を含めたボキャブラリーを豊富にし、同採点基準で高得点を目指す一方で、様々な語彙・表現を英作文で使えるようになる一助にでもなれば幸甚です。
もちろん、読解力の向上にもつながっていきます。
<embark on・・・> 「し始める」
・ The country has embarked on bilateral trade deals with the intention of exerting
pressure on its competing nation.
"embark on something = start doing it " ですが、単に "start" や "begin" を使用するよりも
英作文自体の印象が変わってくると思います。
「with the intention of exerting pressure on・・・・」 「圧力をかける意図で」
・He embarked on reshaping the country's economic trajectory.
「reshaping the country's economic trajectory」 「経済軌道を再構築する」
・With the backing of Unicef, the organization embarked on a pilot program for refugees.
startなどでもいいのですが、同じ語彙の繰り返しを避ける為や、「乗り出す」というニュアンスを伝える為にも、embark on を操れると良いですね。
