英検英作文対策：語彙のマンネリ化を打破！ 同じ単語の繰返しを防ぐ言換え術

英検英作文問題の採点基準「語彙」で高得点を狙う為に絶対に避けたいのが、「同じ単語や表現の繰返し」です。

特に理由を説明する際、つい使い慣れた基本語に頼ってしまいがちですが、少し表現をずらすだけで、英作文の知的印象はガラリと変わります。

今回は、我々日本人学習者がつい使い過ぎてしまう語彙と、その「言換えレパートリー」を詳しく解説します。

「増減」を表わす語彙のバリエーション 　

英検英作文問題で出題される社会問題の傾向を説明する際に、"increase" と "decrease" ばかり使っていませんか？

これらは、我々日本人がつい使ってしまう単語ですが、次の様な言い換え語があります。

・増加：increase の代わりに、

① rise / be on the rise - 最も汎用性が高い表現

② surge - 急増する (力強い表現)

③ soar - 急上昇する (高く舞い上がるイメージ)

以下の様な例文をご紹介します。

① The number of tourists is on the rise.

英検2級 ～ 英検準2級などで、頻繁に使えます。

② Energy cost have surged in recent years.

英検1級 ～ 英検準1級の英作文に適しています。

・減少：decrease の代わりに、

① decline - 緩やかに、又は継続的に減少する

② plunge / plummet - 急落する、一気に下がる

以下の様な例文をご紹介します。

① The birthrate continues to decline.

英検1級 ～ 英検2級などで、頻繁に使えます。

② The company's profits plunged due to the economic crisis.

英検1級 ～ 英検準1級の英作文に適しています。

「人々」の表現を具体化する

何でも people で済ませてしまうと、文章が幼稚に見えてしまうことがあります。

次の様な言い換え語を使ってみては如何でしょうか？

・those：「 ～ する人々 (those who・・)」などの形で非常に便利に使えます。

・individual：個々人、一人一人の人間

・citizens / residents：市民、住民 (社会問題に対し有効な単語です)

・consumers：消費者 (経済・ビジネスの話題で有効)

以下の様な例文で使えます。

① Government policies should support those who are seeking jobs.

英検1級 ～ 英検準1級の英作文に適しています。

② Each invidivual has a responsibility to protect the environment.

英検1級 ～ 英検2級の英作文に適しています。

更に差がつく：その他のよく使う語彙の言換え

他にも、ついつい何度も使ってしまいそうな頻出語彙をアップデートしてみましょう。

・important ⇒ crucial, essential, vital

・many ⇒ a variety of, numerous, a vast number of

・think ⇒ believe, claim, maintain, argue

(これらは要約問題でも便利に使えます)

・good ⇒ beneficial, positive, effective

・bad ⇒ harmful, detrimental, negative

言換えを行なうコツ：具体性を高める

言換えをスムーズに行なうコツは、「その単語をより具体的に説明できないか？」と自分に言い聞かせる事です。

例えば、「インターネットには多くのメリット (good things) がある」と言いたいとき、beneficial (有益な) と言換えるだけで語彙の評価が高まります。

犯罪という深刻なトピックに対し、surgeを使うと危機感が伝わります。

important は馴染みのある語彙ですが、使いすぎると採点官への悪化も低下します。

③ Some individuals argue that social media had detremental effects on teenagers.

argue は要約問題でも便利に使える語彙です。

終わりに：語彙の貯金を作ろう

「言換え」は知っている単語を増やすだけでなく、「今持っている知識をどの様に使い回すか」の戦略です。

同じ語彙を、ついつい繰返し使ってしまう方は、次にエッセイを書くときに、1つの単語に3回以上お世話にならないように意識してみて下さい。
