AIとは賢くつき合おう　

AIが我々の生活の中にかなりのスピードで組み込まれています。

当然メリットもあればデメリットもあるのが自然ですね。

オックスフォード大学出版局は、"Brain rot" (脳の腐敗) を2024年の「今年の言葉」に選んでいます。

SNS等に過度に依存する現象に警鐘を鳴らしたものです。

2025年11月18日のThe New York Timesには、AIが認知機能に与える負の影響に関する研究を紹介しており、同記事のタイトルが To avoid "brain rot", try using brain です。

和訳すると「脳の退化を防ぐために、自分の頭を使いましょう」という感じでしょうか。

このブログでは、同記事で紹介された研究の概要を、英文とその和訳を交えながら紹介します。

英文に含まれる語彙などが英作文対策として役立ち、研究内容が、今後の英語学習における AI 活用方法を探る上での参考になれば幸いです。

研究の概要（エッセイ執筆時のAI活用とその影響Ⅰ）　

①研究方法

For part of the study, students were asked to write an essay ranging from 500 to 1,000 words, and they were divided into three different groups.

「学生が500 ～ 1,000時のエッセイを書く様依頼され、3つの異なるグループに分けられ

た」

・range A from B = AからBにわたって

・divide = 分ける。名詞形のdivision(分断)は、最近よく使われる語彙で、英検1級や準1級の課題に相応しい単語として便利に使えます。

One group could write with the help of ChatGPT, a secodn group could look up information only with a traditional Google search, and a thrid group could rely only on their brains to compose their assignment.

グループ1：ChatGPTを使用できる。

グループ2：従来のグーグル検索エンジンのみ利用できる。

グループ3：100%自分で考えてエッセイを書く。

・rely on = 頼る

The students wore sensors that measured electrical activity in their brains.

生徒は脳波の活動を測定できるセンサーを装着。

・measure = 測定する

②研究結果

The ChatGPT users showed the lowest brain activity, which was unsurprising since they were letting the A.I. chatbot do the work.

ChatGPTを使えるグループ1の生徒の脳の活動は、最も低調だった。A.I.がエッセイを書いてくれるので、その結果は当然と言えます。

・let 目的語 + 原形不定詞 = ～させる。英検英作文採点基準の「文法」で求められる多様な文型にも寄与します。

But the most striking revelation arose after the students finished the writing experience.

One minute after completing their essays, the students were asked to quote any part of their essay.

しかし、エッセイを書き終わった後に驚くべきことが分かった。

エッセイを書き終えた1分後に、エッセイのどの部分でもよいので、引用する様指示を受けると、

・reveal = 明らかにする。名詞形が revelation

The vast majority of ChatGPT users (83 percent) could not recall a single sentense.

ChatGPTを使ったグループでは、大部分(83%)が一つの文さえ思い出すことができなかった。

・vast majority = 大部分。majority の反対語の minority も英検英作文で使えそうな語彙です。

・a single = 一つも ("a" と "single"を重ねて強調しています）

In contrast, the students using Google's search engine could quote some parts, and the students who relied on no tech could recite lots of lines, with some even quoting almost entirety of their essays verbatim.

ChatGPT利用グループ：大半(83%)が、1文も思い出せない。

グーグル検索エンジン利用グループ：エッセイの一部を思い出せる。

自力で書いたグループ：かなりの部分を思い出せる(ほとんどすべてを思い出せる者もいる)

・in contrast = 対照的に。英検英作文採点基準「構成」で評価される、文章の流れを明確にする語彙として便利です。

補足研究の概要（エッセイ執筆時のAI活用とその影響Ⅱ）

①補足実験方法

Eventually, the groups in that study swapped roles : The people who relied only on their brain to write got to use ChatGPT, and the people who had relied on ChatGPT could use only their brains.

最後に、グループを入れ替わりさせます。

先に自力でエッセイを書いたグループはChatGPTを使えるようにし、ChatGPTを使ったグループは自力でのみエッセイを書きました。

・eventually = 最後に

All the students wrote essays on the same topics they had chosen before.

エッセイの課題内容は同じです。

②補足実験結果

The students who had originally relied only on their brains recorded the highest brain activity once they were allowed to use ChatGPT.

先に自力でエッセイを書いたグループでは、ChatGPTを使える様になると最も高い脳の活動が測定された。

・originally = 元は。形容詞のoriginal と共に、英検英作文で使えそうな語彙です。

・allow 目的語 + to-不定詞 = ～を許可する。可能にする。

The students who had initially used ChatGPT, on the other hand, were never on a par with the former group when they were restricted to using their brains.

一方で、先にChatGPTを使ったグループでは、自力でエッセイ執筆時にも対象グループと同等の活発な脳の活動を測定される事はなかった。

・initially = 元は。originally の言換え。英検英作文で役立つ技術です。

・on the other hand = 一方で。要約問題でも頻繁に利用できる表現です。

挿入表現は、日本英語検定協会 英作文問題解答例で繰返し使われます。

・restrict = 制限する

推奨AI活用法（研究結果より）

That suggests that people who are eager to use chatbots for writing and learning should consider starting the process on their own before turning to the A.I. tools later in the process for revisions, similar to math students using caliculator to solve problems only after they have used pencil and paper to learn the formulas and equations.

この事から、書き物や勉学にAIを使いたい場合には、まずは自分の頭で考え、その後AIを使って、修正を加える事を検討すべきと考えられる。

これは、数学で、最初に紙と鉛筆で公式や等式を学び、その後計算機を使って問題を解く過程と似ている。

・eager to = ～したい

・consider = 考える。

"Considering the above three (or two) reasons, I conclude・・" は結論パラグラフのテンプレートにもなります。

・turn to = 頼る

・formula and equation = 公式と等式

＊最初からAIに頼るのではなく、まずは自分の頭で考えることが重要です。

子供のソーシャルメデイア利用と認知能力への影響

別の研究ですが、ソーシャルメデイア利用時間が与える、子供の認知機能への影響に関する研究も行なわれています。

The data showed that children who reported using a low amount of social media (one hour a day) to a high amount (at least three hours a day) score significantly lower on reading, memory and vocaburary tests than children who reported using no social media.

データによると、1日のソーシャルメデイア利用時間が1時間、3時間以上の子供は、全く使わない子供より、読み方、記憶力、ボキャブラリーテストの点数が、ずっと低い。

significantly = 相当。　英検1級や準1級英作文で役立つ語彙です。

As for why social media apps like TikTok and Instgram would harm test scores, the only safe conclusion is that every hour a child spends scrolling through apps takes time away from more enriching activities like reading and sleeping, Dr. Nagata said.

TinTok やインスタグラムのようなアプリがテストスコアに悪影響を与える理由については、アプリをスクロールする時間が、読書や睡眠等のより豊かな時間を奪う為と結論づけるのが無難だろう。

・harm = 害する。名詞でも動詞でも、英検英作文で便利に使えます。

・enrich = 豊かにする。"接頭語 en- + 形容詞 = 動詞" で語彙力を強化できます。
