英作文の視点：組織の命令と個人の良心を英語で考える

英検のライティングや二次試験 (面接) では、"Ethics in sociey" (社会における倫理) や "Individial vs. Organization" (個人対組織) といった重厚なテーマが出題されます。
本ブログでは、米国、中国、そして日本での歴史的なエピソードを参考に、「良心に従い、命令に背いた(あるいは、背わなかった) 人たち」というテーマを英語で紐解いてみます。
1．権力に屈しなかった精神科医 Dr. Barney Malloy
1971年、ニクソン大統領はCIAに対し、ベトナム戦争への米国参戦に関する機密文書を漏洩したダニエル・エルズバーグ氏を陥れる為の「精神分析プロファイル」作成を命じました。
しかし、担当したマロイ博士は、医学的良心に基づき、大統領の意向とは正反対の評価を下しました。
Dr. Barney Malloy described Ellsberg as a man of "dazzling intelligence" and suggested that his main reason for leaking the documents was his conviction that the executive branch should not alone have so much unshared power as to plunge the country into the war and the misery and death it brings.
和訳：

武力鎮圧を拒んだ将軍：Gen. Xu Qinxian (徐勤先)
1989年、天安門事件の際、武力によるデモ鎮圧を命じられた徐将軍は、「個人の良心と専門的な判断」からその命令を拒絶しました。
"I had disagreement about this," referring to the martial law order.
"The protest should be resolved mainly through political means, not by force."
和訳：
戒厳令の命令に触れ、「私はこれに同意できなかった」と彼は述べました。
「抗議活動は武力ではなく、主に政治手段によって解決されるべきだ。」
General Xu explained that he refused the order as a matter of individual conscience and professional judgement.
和訳：
徐将軍は、個人の良心と専門的な判断として、その命令を拒絶したと説明しました。

企業風土と責任
翻って現代のビジネス界。
二デックの創業者・永守氏は、自らが築いた企業風土が、結果として組織に歪みを生んだ可能性を認め、身を引く決断をしました。
これは、命令に背く側ではなく、命令を出す側の責任を考えさせる事例です。
"I build the corporate culture of Nidec. I am sorry for causing concerns to everyone regarding the corporate culture."
和訳：
二デックの企業風土は私が築いた。皆様にご心配をお掛けし申し訳なく思う。
When a corporate culture becomes too rigid, it can stifle individual conscience and discourage employees from raising ethical concerns.
和訳：
企業風土が硬直化しすぎると、個人の良心を抑圧し、従業員が倫理的な懸念を提起することを妨げてしまうことがあります。
英作文への応用 ”Individual Conscience"をどう書くか？
英検の記述で「良心に従う重要性」を論じる際、上記のエピソードは強力な具体例 (Supporting Details) になります。
有効な英語表現として以下の様なものがあります。
・uphold one's principles = 自分の信念を守る
・defy an unethical order = 非倫理的な命令に背く
・prioritize ethics over organizational loyalty = 組織への忠誠よりも倫理を優先する
組織の一員として生きる中で、"blind obedience" (盲目的服従) に陥らないためには、強い信念 (conviction) が求められます。

One of the most significant reasons why individuals should prioritize their conscience over orders is that blind obedience can lead to grave ethical violations.
When authority figures issue commands that conflict with human rights or public interest, it is the individual to resist.
For instance, in 1989, General Xu Qinxian famously defined orders to use force against pro-democracy protesters in Beijing.
He explained that his refusal was "a matter of individual conscience and professional judgement," asserting that conflicts should be resolved mainly through political means, not by force.
Similary, Dr. Barney Malloy, a CIA psychiatrist, refused to succumb to political pressure from the Nixon administration to malign a whistleblower's mental health.
These examples demonstrate that the courage to say 'no" is essential to prevent the abuse of power and to uphold justice within society.
和訳：
個人が命令よりも良心を優先すべき最も重要な理由の一つは、盲目的な服従が重大な倫理違反を招く可能性があるからです。
権力者が人権や公共の利益に抵触する命令を出した場合、それに抵抗することは個人の道徳的義務です。
